Taylor Memorial Cemetery

Taylor Memorial Cemetery

History

The tract of land where Taylor Memorial Cemetery is located was deeded to the Town in 1950 by the W.J. Howey Company (the corporate entity our town founder set up).

The cemetery was dedicated to the memory of Dodge Taylor who died earlier that year. Mr. Taylor was referred to as “Mr. Citrus” and was described as one of the most colorful and aggressive leaders in the citrus industry.

One of the major reasons the cemetery was named so was because Dodge Taylor and C.V. Griffin rescued the Town of Howey-in-the-Hills when it was one of the 150 Florida towns and cities that were in default on their bond obligations due to losses resulting from years of a depressed economy  during the 1930’s and 1940’s.  Dodge Taylor and C.V. Griffin refinanced the bond issue and paid it off in 11 years.  By the end of the 1960’s, the Town was solvent.

In order to purchase a cemetery plot one must be a current resident, or reside in the Howey-in-the-Hills zip code (34737). We encourage all of our citizens to visit our cemetery to experience its peaceful and serene beauty.
