Town Elections

The Howey-in-the-Hills Town Council elections take place every other year, in even-numbered years. Town Council members serve four year terms.

Elections for Seat #1, Seat #2, and Seat #3 shall be held in numbered years not evenly divided by 4.
Elections for Seat #4 and Seat #5 shall be held in numbered years evenly divided by 4. 
Council seats will be filled by the three candidates or two candidates, as applicable, receiving the highest number of votes.

All persons running for the office of councilor shall be at least 21 years of age, a registered voter, and a resident of the Town for at least one year prior to the first day of the qualifying period. To qualify, each candidate must file with the Clerk a petition signed by no fewer than 25 Town electors nominating the candidate for Town Council. The petition must be filed no earlier than noon on the 92nd day, and no later than noon on the 81st day, before the date of the election for which qualifying is sought. Elector signatures on the petition must be verified by the supervisor of elections. The candidate shall also provide a statement that, if elected, he/she will serve, and if not the Council shall omit his/her name from the ballot.

Any person convicted of a felony shall be ineligible and disqualified from seeking election to an office or appointment to any board, commission, committee or agency in the Town. No more than one family member may hold a seat on the Council. Therefore, a councilor's family members are disqualified from seeking election to the Council unless the family members' terms will not be concurrent. A family member includes parents, siblings, children or spouses.

(The 2024 Election Qualifying period begins on Monday, August 5, 2024 at noon and ends on Friday, August 16, 2022 at noon.)

ELECTION INFORMATION

  1. Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository Form DS-DE9 must be filed first with the Town Clerk before opening a Campaign Account and accepting contributions and/or expending funds tied to your campaign for public office. (Banks will request this document).

  2. Once the campaign account is open, the petition is provided to the candidate to collect signatures. 

  3. The Statement of Candidate must be filed within 10 days of the filing of Appointment of Campaign Treasurer.

  4. The Petition must be accompanied by the executed Candidate Oath, Form 6 Financial Disclosure along with the 1% election assessment fee during the qualifying period.

Voting and Registration

To vote in Town of Howey-in-the-Hills elections, residents must register at the office of the Lake County Supervisor of Elections, 1898 E. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares, Florida, during the usual office hours. For additional voting information visit www.lakevotes.com. Polling Places for the town of Howey-in-the Hills

On election day the polls are open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Bring photo ID, with signature. Check your voters registration card for your official polling place. On election day you must vote in your assigned polling place.
